From Idea to Game – A Piece of the Puzzle

In the beginning there was only the novel, the Zauberfluss. There was no plan to create a game. Sure – a fantasy setting, gaming dice and a good bit of imagination is fun, but it never came to mind as a project. And in fact, writing the novel is enough work to do on it’s own. In addition, life is not as easy as it seems and sometimes the game master shows you the abyss for quite some time.

But as the Zauberfluss in the novel is the creator of a world, it became the creator of this game, too. On a terrible spring day in May 2026 – rainy and cold, I was wondering what to do with this day. Didn’t want to write, didn’t want to go out, just had a feeling of some kind of longing. The day, terrible as it was, was a pure invitation to dive into a dreamworld. I wanted something active, wanted to be in the world I created, wanted adventure – and it had to be me inside this adventure. Well, none of my friends where around that day, but I thought, if I venture forth into adventure, I would like to have friends with me.

And so the idea was born. My mind, positively on fire with creative ramblings, convinced me, that it was absolutely reasonable to create a TTRPG while writing a novel… It just had to be, of course… Well to be perfectly honest, after a short while, it indeed suddenly felt like a natural thing to do – even if I had at first no idea how to. Sometimes there are situations in life like those. And in hindsight, it is a natural thing indeed. The Zauberfluss was on my mind, the joy of creation along with a strange and deep feeling of conviction.

Thus it started. The same day I wrote the Intro – section of the game. I had the setting in mind, the adventurers, the monsters – and a story interwoven with the novel to come. It all became naturally part of the Zauberfluss – Universe. The puzzle pieces fell into place, even developing the background story of the novel and not only this game. Of course, the idea further evolved over time, but there was this flow, this feeling of life. I hope you will find that feeling, that soul, in playing the game and enjoy it just as much.
